Mavis Grind

""The Gate on the Narrow Isthmus"", Mavis Grind is almost a causeway (width of only 50m) joining Northmavine to the rest of the Shetland Mainland. On one side is Sullom Voe (famous for its oil storage depot) and the North Sea, whilst on the other is Busta Voe and the Atlantic Ocean.

To the north, the landscape is dominated by Ronas Hill, Shetland's highest hill at 450m. at the top of which is a prehistoric chambered burial cairn - one of the many hundreds to be found (and probably still to be found) in the Shetland Isles.
