Menzies Castle
Scotland > East of Scotland > Perthshire > Menzies Castle
Menzies Castle is located near Aberfeldy. It was built in the 16th cent as the seat of the chiefs of the Clan Menzies. The castle was occupied by Cromwell's forces in the 1650s and later by the Jacobites in the 1715 rebellion. In the second Jacobite rebellion of 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed in the castle, which caused the Government forces to evict the family in revenge. The present castle has Victorian extentions dating from around 1840. The exiled Polish Army forces, fighting for the allies, used the castle during the second World War.Since the Castle was acquired in 1957 a lot of work has gone into restoring and maintaining the building. It is open to the public every day from April to October. The Menzies Clan Society welcomes members and their family and friends from all over the world to various events every year.
