YesScotland.com : A view of Newmilns Newmilns is the middle village of the three 'valley burghs', the others being Galston and Darvel. It lies in the Irvine Valley east of Kilmarnock on the A71. The village was established in 1490 by Campbell of Loudon, and later became a centre for the Covenanters. There are Covenanting tombstones in the church yard. Historically, industries included the manufacturing of muslin and other textiles. As thanks for its written support of the Union cause during the American Civil War the USA presented the village with a special American flag.
Historic buildings in the village include the Newmilns Tower from 1530 and the Town House from 1739.
