Ashiestiel

Scotland > South of Scotland > Selkirkshire > Ashiestiel

Small village and estate to the south of the River Tweed accessed between Caddonfoot (A707) and the roundabout to the west leading to Clovenfords and Galashiels (A72). This access road traverses the south side of the Tweed all the way to Innerleithen - not a classified road, though and perhaps better utilised by cycle.

Ashiesteel House used to be the residence of Sir Walter Scott when Sheriff of Selkirkshire and prior to his building of Abbotsford House. Between 1804 and 1812, Sir Walter wrote "The Lady of the Lake", "The Lay of the Last Minstrel" and "Marmion" here at Ashiestiel.
