An area/district of Western Sutherland once a large privately owned estate with Loch Assynt at its centre and the fishing village of Lochinver on its west coast.
The remains of Ardvreck Castle lie at the eastern edge of Loch Assynt, 2 miles north of Inchnadamph on the A837. This castle was the stronghold of the Macleods of Assynt until 1672 when it was abandoned.

Some of the Highland's most spectacular and significant mountains are in this area including Ben More Assynt (998m), Canisp (847m), Suilven (731m), Quinag (809m) and to the south, Cul Mor (849m). It is, therefore, one of the most popular areas for walking and climbing. A walking trip to Eas Chual Aluinn, the highest waterfall in the UK is wel worth the trek along the southern shores of Loch Glencoul from Kylesku.
Fishing has, historically, been a very important attraction and there are a number of famous old fishing hotels in the area.
