Small village (population under 200) on the A711 between Dalbeattie and Kirkcudbright overlooking Auchencairn Bay and the Solway Firth.

Hestan Island lies in the Bay. The lighthouse was mentioned in 2 novels by SR Crockett - "Raiders" and "Isle Rathan".

Near to the village stands Balcary House, reputedly built by smugglers, and an ancient burial cairn.
