Port GlasgowScotland > Central Scotland > Renfrewshire > Port Glasgow Located twenty miles northwest of Glasgow on the River Clyde, Port Glasgow was founded in the 17th century as the harbour and chief custom-house for Glasgow - from 1710 until the river was deepened in the late 18th century allowing larger ships to navigate the river to Glagow itself. Nearby Newark Castle bears an inscription of 1597 and sits majestically above the town. In 1812, the 'Comet' was built here by James Wood. ![]() |
