Prestonpans

Prestonpans lies between Cockenzie and Musselburgh and was once noted for its coal and salt industries, the latter being established in the 12th century by monks from Newbattle Abbey. The town is home to a 17th century Mercat Cross and many restored houses from that same period. Prestonpans is most famous for the battle between Prince Charles' Highland Troops and Sir John Cope on 21th September 1745 and this is remembered in a memorial cairn just east of the town. Sir Walter Scott was resident here while researching his book 'Waverley.'
