The town was made a royal burgh in 1404 by King Robert III who was later killed at Rothesay Castle.

The original shoreline lies roughly 200m inland from the present day shore.

The pier and promenade at Rothesay helped made it a popular holiday destination for Victorian Scots.

Rothesay Castle was built around 1098 and has since passed through many hands. It has been described as' one of the most remarkable medieval castles in Scotland' and is one of the few that are surrounded by a moat in Scotland.
