Rousay, pronounced, "row - see" (from the old Norse, Hrolfsay) "Hrolf's Island". In centuries past, Rousay crofters suffered badly from their landlords charging huge rents, most were made homeless. The Isle of Rousay, located off the west coast of the Mainland Island. It has many remarkable ancient sites.

The Taversoe Tuick, a chambered cairn built into a hillside on the south side of Rousay, overlooks Wyre Sound.

It Dates from about 3,000 BC. The most interesting thing about this Neolithic cairn is that it is a 2 storey structure, with one chamber set on top of the other. The 'Great Ship of Death' can be found on the island, such is the historical importance of Rousay that most of it has been designated a Site of Scientific Special Interest.
