Isle of South Ronaldsay

Scotland > Orkney and Shetland > Orkney > Isle of South Ronaldsay

South Ronaldsay is linked to Mainland Orkney via Burray by the Churchill Barriers. It is the southernmost island of the Orkney Island group. It rises to a height of approx 387 feet and has an area of 12,306 acres, most of which is given over to farming livestock. The main settlement is St Margaret's Hope.

Every year the "Sand o' Right" in Widewall Bay is the scene of a unique ploughing match involving boys under 15 years old using miniature ploughs. The oil pipeline from the North Sea to the Flotta oil terminal passes through the north end of the island.
