On A76 8 miles north of Dumfries on the Thornhill road on the River Nith. Robert Burns used to live in nearby Ellisland Farm where he wrote "Tam O'Shanter".

In the small Dalswinton Castle loch, Burns was a passenger in an experimental steam-driven vessel.
