Isle of Benbecula

Scotland > Western Isles > Isle of Benbecula

Sandwiched between North and South Uist in the Hebrides, Benbecula is probably best known for its rocket testing range and military base at Ballivanich and its connection with Bonnie Prince Charlie who landed here and then salied with Flora Macdonald for Uig in Skye in 1746. In those days, it was a separate island but now all three are connected by causeways - in days gone by you had to wait til the tide went out and you crossed over the mudflats.

This small island is covered with small lochans and fishing can be interesting and experimental - not only loch fishing but also shore sea angling. The island also has its own airstrip with scheduled flights to Stornoway, Inverness and ...well, the whole world!

This is a lovely island to explore and a good base for visiting the Uists.
