YesScotland.com : A view of Ballantrae A pleasant village south of Ayr on the road to Stranraer. The village of Ballantrae lies on the A77 approximately 21 km south of Girvan.

Sitting back from Ballantrae Bay, on the River Stinchar estuary, with a beach of sand and shingle. This whole stretch of coastline, including Ballantrae Shingle Beach, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. There are several laybys from which the sea and shoreline can be viewed.
At the southern end of the village a westwards turn leads from the A77 to a large car park, with toilets, by the shore.

The shoreline, from the harbour at the north to the shingle bank and estuary of the River Stinchar at the south end, is well worth exploring. With views dominated by the granite rock island of Ailsa Craig (1,114ft high).

Its name was made famous by R. L. Stevenson in his novel "The Master of Ballantrae".
