Isle of Whalsay

Small island (5 miles by 2 miles) off the east coast of Shetland Mainland accessed by ferry from Laxo or Vidlin on Mainland - 30 minute trip. Also has a ferry to the Out Skerries islands.

Once owned by the Bruce family who built Symbister House. Frequently visited in the past by German trading vessels.

The island has a busy community of about 1000 people, many of whom are involved with the fishing industry.
