Isle of Yell

Scotland > Orkney and Shetland > Shetland > Isle of Yell

Off the north east corner of Mainland Shetland, Yell is accessed either by ferry from Booth of Toft on the mainland (a half hour trip across Yell Sound) or by plane.

Famous for its sea otters, Yell offers many different habitats for wildlife from the rocky sea cliffs to the barren interior known as "da Wilds o' Yell". Here, the RSPB has 2 reserves.

From Yell you can travel by ferry or plane to Fetlar and Unst and touring around these islands is popular as they are so wild and extreme on the one hand but extremely beautiful especially in summer when the daylight hours are longest.

There are local coastline walking guide books which are very useful and informative.
