Great Bernera

Scotland > Western Isles > Isle of Lewis > Great Bernera

Great Bernera is an island connected to the west of Lewis by a small bridge over the Atlantic! The island was the location of a revolt by crofters in the mid 19th century and a memorial to that event is located in Breacleit, the main village on the island.

Fishing has been a main income earner for centuries - herring, salmon and lobsters - but today it is the shellfish and salmon farms that offer job opportunities.

Very picturesque island with plenty of archeaology and excellent shore walks.
