Arnol

Scotland > Western Isles > Isle of Lewis > Arnol

On the beatuful west coast of the Isle of Lewis, on the A858 3 miles south of the junction with the A857 Stornoway to Port of Ness road.

Famous places of interest include the Black House Museum which is a fine example of the old black houses which used to be the main form of housing here in previous centuries. The "black" referred to the stain which came from the constant use of local peat (in plentiful supply) as the main fuel for heating and cooking. Even today the sweet smell of peat burning wafts through the air from thousands of fires all over the Western Isles.
