YesScotland.com : The David Livingstone Centre, Blantyre The town of Blantyre, has now almost become a suburb of the nearby town of Hamilton. Livingstone is known worldwide as the birthplace of David Livingstone, the famous Victorian missionary and African explorer. His missionary work started when he went to Africa in 1840 to bring christianity to the African tribes. He was born in a lowley one-roomed tenement in 1813. As a youngster he worked in the local cotton mill before educating himself becoming a doctor. The tenement block, in Station Road has been transformed into the David Livingstone Centre telling the story of his life, including his battle against slave traders and the famous meeting with Stanley ("Mr Livingstone, I presume...").
