YesScotland.com : A view of Bothwell Castle Located across the River Clyde from the town of Hamilton, Bothwell has expanded as a commuter belt location from a very historic and honourable past. Its early importance sprang from its location at Bothwell Bridge which untill 300 years ago was only one of two bridges to span the Clyde. It was the scene of the Battle of Bothwell Brig in 1679 between the Covananters and Monmouths troops. Nearby Bothwell Castle is the largest and finest 13th-century castle in Scotland. Much fought over during the Scottish Wars of Independence. Some parts of the original circular keep survives, but most of the castle dates from the 14th & 15th centuries. Located in a beautiful setting overlooking the River Clyde.
