Brow Well

Shortly before his death at the premature age of only 37, Robert Burns took to the spa waters of Brow Well, 1.5 miles west of Ruthwell on the Solway coast. Being unfit for work, he had lost his job as a excise man in Dumfries and was terrified that he would die a pauper and leave his family in destitution. The waters of Brow Well did not heal him and he died shortly after on Thursday 21st July 1796.
