Broxburn

Scotland > Central Scotland > West Lothian > Broxburn

Situated between the M9 and the M8 and on the route of the Union Canal, Broxburn now has the relatively new town of Livingston across the M8 (Junction 3) as a near neighbour. Unlike its young neighbour, though, Broxburn has a strong mining heritage dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries extracting oil from the vast shale and coal reserves.

Broxburn and Uphall share the same main street but Uphall has a much older heritage. Livingston is to Broxburn as Broxburn is to Uphall!

At one time there was one colliery and 3 oil shale works together with a fish rendering factory in Broxburn. The Broxburn Shale Oil Company once employed 2000 people but this industry came to a halt in the 1950s.

Almondell and Calderwood Country Park lies near to the town.
