Renfrewshire

Scotland > Central Scotland > Renfrewshire

YesScotland.com : Cloch Lighthouse A relatively small county to the south of the River Clyde with the town of Paisley in the centre. The towns along the banks of the Clyde were, not surprisingly, associated with shipbuilding and heavy engineering, much of which has been in decline for a number of years. Towns such as Greenock and Port Glasgow in particular.

Paisley has been associated with textiles for decades and the Paisley Pattern is known in sewing circles all over the world.

In addition to heavy industry, Renfrewshire also has a name for leisure - resorts such as Wemyss Bay and Gourock offered leisure facilities for the masses during annual holidays and Gourock also offered ferry facilities to another resort over the water - Dunoon.

Inland, villages and towns such as Kilmacolm offred similar but land based facilities for those not too keen on the sea!

Mainly, though, Renfrewshire is a dormitory area for the large business conurbations of the Clyde Valley, especially Glasgow and Paisley - but a nice place to live.
