Angus

Scotland > East of Scotland > Angus

YesScotland.com : Arbroath Abbey The ancient county of Angus lies on the north shore of the River Tay overlooking Fife to the south. Today, Dundee, the largest city in the county has split away from the rest of Angus as far as Political local authority boundaries are concerned but within YesScotland it is still part of the County of Angus.

Surprisingly, the old capital of Angus was not Dundee but Forfar (the county was one known as Forfarshire). To the east is the North Sea and to the west, the Grampian Mountains and many glens offering superb walking and natural history treks. Many towns of interest apart from Forfar and Dundee, include Kirriemuir (memories here of JM Barrie, author of Peter Pan); Glamis, with Glamis Castle which is open to the public (see places of interest sections of YesScotland); Arbroath, once a famous fishing port; Montrose; Brechin. Glens such as Clova, Prosen and Esk heading north west into the Grampians. These Glens were once used as hiding places for rustlers and those keep away from Red Coats!

To the south lies Dundee which has visibly changed over the3 past 10 years into an educational and hi-technology centre, away from its original tenets of "jam, jute and journalism". Also, surprisingly, there are a large number of Scottish League football teams in Angus ranging from Dundee and the next door neighbours Dundee United (Premier League) to Arbroath, Montrose, Brechin and Forfar in the Scottish Leagues.

Access to the County is simple. From the south by road or rail over the Tay Bridges or from Perth along the A85. Dundee also has an airport with direct flights to London City by ScotAirways (www.scotairways.co.uk).
