Carter Bar

Scotland > South of Scotland > Roxburghshire > Carter Bar

On the A68 marking the border between England and Scotland. To stop here on your way north having passed through infertile moorland and heather and to have you first glimpse of Scotland from the top of this road at Carter Bar will perhaps to explain to you why this land was so fiercely fought over in the past. Ahead of you, green fertile hills, fields and woodland - a complete change from the land you have just passed through in England.

being the highest point on this road it is subject to some adverse weather conditions especially in winter but ona clear winf free spring, summer or autumnal day the views are breathtaking. There are two large car parks here on either side of the road but as they are on a relatively steep corners, do take care!

yesscotland.com says:
For the adventurous, there are walks from here which take you east to where there is evidence of Roman forts. Without doubt, if you want a spectacular entrance to Scotland, this is it, with views beyond the Eildons and Melrose.
