Coldstream

Scotland > South of Scotland > Berwickshire > Coldstream

Right on the border of Scotland and England, Coldstream, on the northern bank of the River Tweed, is the home of the famous Coldstream Guards Regiment, raised in 1650. If you croos the bridge you will see a plaque commemmorating that is was by this route that Robert Burns first entered England! Before the bridge was built, this was the location of a ford by which Edward 1 first entered Scotland in 1296.

Nowadays, Coldstream sits of the A697, one of the main routes into Scotland from Northumberland.

One mile north of the town centre is the estate known as the "Hirsel" home of the Douglas-Humes and once the home of former Prime Minister Sir Alec Douglas-Hume.
