Denholm

Scotland > South of Scotland > Roxburghshire > Denholm

Denholm is one of the few villages to have that Scottish rareity - a village green. On the green is a memorial to John Leyden, scholar and poet (1775-1811) who was born in the village. It was also the birthplace of John Scott, botanist (1836-1880), James Murray of the Oxford English Dictionary (1837-1915).
The village houses are a mix of 17th and 18th century buildings with Westgate House dating from 1663, built for Sir Archibald Douglas and his wife.
