Acharacle

Scotland > West of Scotland > Argyll > Acharacle

At the foot of Loch Shiel in ancient Lochaber in Inverness-shire. Nearby stand the "Seven Men of Moidart" a group of seven trees planted in honour of the men from this area who encouraged Chares Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) to return to Scotland to reclaim the throne for his father.

Nearby stands Castle Tioram, once a MacDonald of Clanranald fortress but destroyed in 1715 in case it fell into the hands of the Hanoverians during the 1715 Jacobite Rising. Recently the subject of a controversial plan to have it re-built (why not?) - do people really prefer ruins and do we not have enough ruins in the Highlands already!

Also close to Acharacle lies the beautiful beaches at Ardtoe. The River Shiel flows through Acharacle - very well laid out for salmon fishing.

Acharacle is on the A850, 1 mile north of Salen, the gateway to the Ardnamurchan peninsula.
