Isle of Eriskay

Scotland > Western Isles > Isle of Eriskay

The Isle of Eriskay sits between the Barra group of islands and South Uist in the Outer Hebrides. The Isle is only 3 miles by 1.5 miles. It is famous around the world as the first landing place on Scotland of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) as he arrived to begin the failed Jacobite Rising of 1745.
The Bay where he landed is still called the Princes Bay.
The Isle will always be remembered by Gaelic speakers for the fine work Father Allan MacDonald did in his time on the Isle to preserve and record a Gaelic songs and melodies. There is a memorial to him in the church of St Michael at the centre of the Isle.
The Island on which little seems to have changed for centuries, is one of great beauty, soft colour and rounded contours.
