Affric

Scotland > Highland Counties > Inverness-shire > Affric

Affric tends to be more of a generic term for Glen Affric which lies to the south west of Beauly in Inverness-shire. From Beauly, take the A831 past Beaufort Castle (owned by Anne Gloag of Stagecoach fame) following the River Glass down Strath Glass to Invercannich where the road turns east towards Drumnadrochit. At this junction, Strath Glass is joined by a further 2 "Straths", Cannich and Affric. In the 18th and 19th centuries, these valleys were well inhabited by crofters who have since disappeared - mainly during the infamous Clearances.

The walks around here can be awe-inspiring, romantic and sad. Here, you really are in the heart of the Highlands in every way and if you can secure self catering accommodation or Hotel accommodation, a fortnight's stay would not be amiss especially if you like walking, wildlife, cultural history and wide open spaces. Not for the agoraphobic! You will also have to put up with midges during the season and come prepared for the inevitable rain!
