Hawick

Scotland > South of Scotland > Roxburghshire > Hawick

Located on the A7, some 14 miles west of Jedburgh. This is the largest of the border towns and like many in the Borders was made prosperous through its knitwear manufacturing. The towns knitted products ranged from socks/stockings to jumpers and tops. Today the town is in a period of economic change but still retains its Border strength.

The riding of the marches (boundaries) is an old tradition dating back to the battle of Flodden, when the towns young men (Callants) routed the English raiders. This is celebrated annually when the Callants and their elected "Cornet" ride the marches in a large mounted cavalcade.

The town is built along the River Teviot and is joined in the town centre by Slitrig Water from the south. The old High Street has some superb old stone buildings with some famous names - Liberal Club, Prudential Insurance etc names now long gone but leaving these excellent buildings as their legacy. When in Hawick lift your eyes and look at the top of the buildings - the town's heritage is aften to be found engraved on the upper facades!

Another passion, shared by most of the border towns is rugby, enjoyed by many today in the numerous Hawick Clubs none more important than Hawick Rugby Club based at Mansfield Park, one of the most historic clubs in the UK.

yesscotland.com says:
Hawick is in the process of re-inventing itself having suffered from the demise of the textile industry. Because of its pure passion and strength of nature it will succeed - a strength borne out of a fierce independence and a history of hard work - agriculture, textile factories - the strength of the Rugby Club is fine evidence of that. Apart from a number of rugby clubs it also has a number of football clubs as well, some doing better than others but proving the sporting nature of this part of Scotland.
